As a result of racially-targeted hate crimes in the United States, specifically, the recent mass shooting that occurred at a Walmart in El Paso, TX, last month, the Mexican government is organizing a summit that will include leaders from Spanish-speaking nations to discuss the threat of white supremacy, according to a recent article by The Dallas Morning News.

“…we all blend on the border,” said New Mexico State House Rep., Patricia Roybal Caballero. “If you’re brown, or the other, we are perfect targets for the hate these hate groups are promulgating. That’s why it’s important for the Mexican government to take a strong stance and that we show our solidarity.”

Roberto Velasco Alvarez, spokesman for Mexico’s Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, said the summit will take place by the end of this year.

The Mexican government also plans to invite influential leaders from Latin America, Spain, Portugal, and the United States, to organize a policy from viewpoints that reflect their political and cultural values, the article states.

Alavrez pointed out that the summit will involve leaders from all Spanish-speaking nations, as the domestic terrorist who killed over 20 people in Texas last month, purposed to intentionally target Hispanics, according to the article.

“This is a big issue for Mexico and for Mexican Americans in the United States,” said Velasco. “But this is also a widespread issue for Latin America, the Caribbean countries, Spain and Portugal. The shooter wasn’t just going after Mexicans. He was targeting Latinos.”
