Chicago Alderman, Danny Solis, claims the police department violated it’s sanctuary city ordinance after arresting an immigrant, while raiding a store that sold counterfeit clothes, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune.

“They’re not supposed to do any effort—even with a warrant—that collaborates with Homeland Security or ICE. A woman who was a clerk there ended up being handcuffed and taken into custody with Homeland Security,” Solis said, the Legal Reader reports.

Ald. Solis states that the raid took place on Aug 1st in the Pilsen neighborhood, which he represents, located on the west side of the city, around 18th street and Ashland, the Chicago Tribune reports.

He indicated that the police confiscated some items from a store during the raid, which was supposed to focus on counterfeit clothing investigation, but instead, law enforcement also collaborated with federal immigration authorities to coordinate an arrest, violating an ordinance and Chicago’s status as a sanctuary city, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Ald. Solis has confirmed that the store employee who was arrested is a mother of three, who is now being held in the McHenry County Jail, one of the facilities that Immigration and Customs Enforcement uses to hold immigrants, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance means that local authorities cannot ask about anyone’s immigration status or pass down information about anyone’s immigration status to federal authorities.

Officials have confirmed that police collaborated with homeland security officials during this incident, however, police has denied any participation in an immigrant arrest. A spokesman also stated that the police had no involvement with federal authorities questioning or arresting a store employee, the Legal Reader reports.

Ald. Solis requested for the police department to focus on using their resources for higher-relative crimes, especially after a recent violent weekend. He’s also seeking for an investigation to ensure that the mother of three is not deported, based on a violation of the city’s ordinance.
